Marine Debris Education Kit for Fishermen

Marine Debris Education Kit for Fishermen

An educational kit on marine debris for Korean fishermen, titled Endless Challenge to Clean Sea, was published on December 31, 2009, with a financial support from the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) (photo).

For the last 9 years, the International Coastal Cleanup campaigns in Korea have revealed that marine and waterway-related debris occupies much higher fraction in the total debris collected than the international average.  This has led OSEAN to develop the kit to educate fishermen on the seriousness of marine debris problems and to show how they can participate in efforts to reduce them.  Mr. Jongmyoung Lee and Ms. Sunwook Hong at OSEAN have coauthored the kit.

The primary target of the education kit is people who closely work with fishermen, such as local officials, coast guards, instructors in local educational institutions, members of fishery cooperatives, and others.  The kit is composed of an instructor’s manual, booklets, a DVD, posters, and a briefcase.  The instructor’s manual provides detailed scripts for educators and supplementary information, reference, and photos are also included in the DVD for in-depth education.  It was designed to be used even in places where there are no electronic equipments such as beam projectors.

The first workshop was held to train potential educators in Jungdo, an island off the southwestern coast of Korea, on April 29-30, 2010.  Mr. Lee introduced the kit to about 170 participants and explained how serious marine debris problem is, why fishermen education is needed, and how to use it.  The kit received an enthusiastic response from the participants.
