Marine Litter Summit Tokyo Forum(2010. 11. 2~3)

Marine Litter Summit Tokyo Forum(2010. 11. 2~3)

JEAN hosts “Marine Litter Summit” every year since 2004.  This forum is to share information, exchange opinions and have
discussions on the themes that are considered important to bring about to open discussions for the circumstances of the moment. At the forum, we meet together with the relevant national and local government officials to the matter, non-government and non-profit organizations, businesses and researchers who have concerns and responsibilities to address the issue.

2010 Marine Litter Summit was held in Tokyo on November 2 and 3.  The theme of this year's forum was to see what measures are needed for promoting collection and disposal of marine litter, together with trash generation prevention, throughout Japan, in relation to the “Law for the Promotion of Marine Litter Disposal” enacted in 2009.  This was required to have a complex conversation among the participants – what type of budget to be secured and what NGOs and NPOs can do to cooperate and work effectively to solve this problem.  We aimed to shed light upon these matters through discussions during the two days forum.

“Law for the Promotion of Marine Litter Disposal”, by the way, comes short of some points, such as lacking stipulation to state draw up basic plans in Japan, apart from not dealing with the measures of disposing marine litter which drifts the ocean or deposited on the sea bed.  We also began bringing out argument to articulate for a swift review of the law.  JEAN will continue addressing those problems cooperating and working together with NGOs and NPOs of Japanese and neighboring countries.
